Tom Selznick (Elijah Wood) is the most talented pianist of his generation, who has stopped acting in public for his stage panic. Years after the catastrophic performance, it reappears for an expected concert in Chicago. In a crowded theater, in front of an expectant audience, Tom finds a message written on the score: "A note fails and you will die." Under the eyes of an anonymous sniper (John Cusack), Tom must be able to interpret the most difficult performance of his life and seek help without being discovered.
